If you ever think musical is lame, think again! Musical is a form of art which combines acting, singing and dancing. It is probably one of the most complex art form but it is also one of the most challenging and fun art form out there because you are combining art forms into one. It is a majestic feeling really.
Even if you are a little bit sceptical about it, you must have heard about a lot of different musicals. Les Miserables, CATS, RENT, Grease, Oklahoma!, West Side Story, or The Sound of Music might went in and out your ears at some point in your life. (Please tell me you have ever heard of it because if you have not, I might judge you for living under a rock!)
Those title might sound really classical (read: boring) to watch because... Well, you cannot really relate to the whole story behind the musical itself. CATS is not about humans; the show is purely entirely just about cats. Or maybe because the songs in the musical are too hard to sing along to. I mean, yes, Les Miserables is uh-ma-zing but can we really sing along to I Dreamed a Dream in daily life? Probably not, unless you are cutting dozens of onions.
Also, there are a lot and a lot more interesting musicals that is not so big (yet! because I really hope they will get bigger) with more catchy pop-y songs featured in them and that is what we're going to talk about!
Feeling jazzy (musically, not emotionally sad)? You might want to check this song out! The musical Aida is a production by Tim Rice and Elton John. What? Yes! Elton John! It is set in Egypt so if you like the music of the Lion King (which was also produced by the Elton John) you might want to check this out. It is definitely more pop jazz like Elton John but in some songs throughout the musical, you can hear the Egyptian feel to them. Listen to this one, My Strongest Suit from AIDA:
You think you have a weird sense of humour or just all in all quirky? Try and watch Reefer Madness! The storyline might be the most bizarre thing you will ever come across, it is just so ridiculous that it is funny :) It was originally a movie in 1936 and in 1998, the first version of the musical was performed. It has also been made into another movie in 2005 starring Kristen Bell. Check out the love song from Reefer Madness by the characters Mary Lane (Kristen Bell) and Jimmy Harper (Christian Campbell) and see how you like it:
Feeling a little bit classic? Maybe a little bit posh and feminine? Ever heard of Little Women? Yes, it is a book written by Louisa May Alcott , published in 1868 (I told you it's a classic). And yes! It is a musical too! :D This is a story of 4 sisters; Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy finding their way in the transition to become young adults together as a family (in the 1860s, of course). Try listen to Some Things Are Meant to be by (character) Jo and Beth. Let it sooth you and calm you down...
Hooked? Do you want more pop contemporary musical to check out? Some of the things I can suggest are: Fame, High School Musical (yes, it is a stage musical now), American Idiot (inspired by the famous Green Day hit song), The Book of Mormon, Hairspray or even Legally Blonde!
See, musical is not lame anymore!
