Pop Culture Phenomena in 2013

The end of 2013 is near and there have been many events, people, songs, movies and series that captured our attention throughout the year. FRANPANCINO has provided you with 5 of these phenomena that captured our attention the most.

1. Beyoncé (a.k.a Queen Bey, Queen B, Queen Bee, The Queen of Pop, or The Queen of The World)

Beyonce is killing it this year! (or should I say, every year!) This year, Beyonce has been busy in and out of the studio. Earlier this year in January, Beyonce made a huge buzz with Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams by releasing a new album as the anticipated Destiny's Child comeback. Then Bey went on singing on Obama's inauguration party and gave an amazing performance on Super Bowl.

Beyonce released DVD of her documentary movie, Life Is But A Dream, which was also featured on HBO. She also appeared in a lot of new singles from Great Gatsby original soundtrack to Kelly Rowland's new song, You Changed, together with Michelle Williams (again). Just recently, Beyonce dropped a surprise visual album in one night with no publication whatsoever. The highly anticipated self-titled album, Beyonce , became an overnight sensation. Even though it's exclusively released on iTunes, Beyonce's new album instantly topped Billboard 200 Chart and sold 617, 213 copies in three days.

2. Miley Cyrus

We just could not keep track of how many times Miley Cyrus' name made it to the news this year. Everything started with the release of her new single, We Can't Stop. People went crazy over her new direction and her new style. The song atop the chart in United Kingdom and New Zealand. A lot of people are concern of her fans who are mainly teenagers and Miley setting a bad example for them. More people went mental when she stated that Hannah Montana is dead.

Miley Cyrus then released her album, Bangerz, which topped the chart in the USA and the UK. She also twerk her way everywhere on stage, especially on the controversial VMA 2013 performance with Robin Thicke. Miley also released a song called, Twerk, with Justin Bieber. As well as her second hit single, Wrecking Ball. To add the list of things Miley did that shock the fans, her 4 year relationship and engagement with Liam Hemsworth ended.

3. Kanye West (+ James Franco and Seth Rogen parody of Bound 2)

I don't know if Kanye West will let anyone finish (except maybe Kim Kardashian, his fiancé) but I will continue anyway. Kanye West knows how to make himself known to public. First, it's his relationship with Kim Kardashian. Then, their cute child who is a direction, North West. After that, his huge proposal to Kim. Then, his new music video, Bound 2, which he claim to be his best work yet. (Honestly, it looks so cheap, we can't even).

On top of that, there is Kanye West existence in social media. Still tweeting great things and contributing wisdom in the world. A few months ago, when Kim posted a picture of her post-baby body on Instagram, Kanye started to compare his fiancé to Michelle Obama. Hold it right there, we know you're in love, Kanye, but you really don't have to go there.

Fortunately, we have James Franco and Seth Rogen to calm the storm down. They released a parody to Bound 2 music video where James Franco is Kanye West and Seth Rogen is Kim Kardashian and it is the best thing 2013 (or James Franco in 2013) has produced.

4. Robin Thicke (and Blurred Lines)

To be honest, I love Robin Thicke's music, especially the ones before Blurred Lines. However, 2013 is the year where he went ultra mainstream and got into a lot of trouble too. I love his music and his voice, I think he's unique and it sort of feels like he's the older Justin Timberlake. Along that line, I really like Blurred Lines musically. I think it has great beat and great riffs, it stuck in your head, it's not heavy and great to dance to. The lyrics on the other hand is very ugly and bad and I know why people is making a huge deal about it.

Thought everything is going to be alright once Robin Thicke realised what he did in the lyrics. But, no. He went the other way. Everything that he say gives the impression that he did everything on purpose. And don't get me started on his VMA 2013 Performance with Miley Cyrus...

5. Breaking Bad

This is the only hype in 2013 that I have no direct contact with (sadly). I have not watch Breaking Bad but from all the hype it's been getting this year, the show deserve to be The Best TV Series or Show in 2013.

That is all to conclude the year 2013. Thank you for coming with us on a journey that will continue again and again because of you all. Happy New Year 2014!
